It's a Baltimore Christmas - Estimated Yardage

I have put together some estimates for various sizes of quilts from wall hanging to king size quilts. In all cases, I have assumed that the blocks will be set solid with no sashing. These estimates do not include extra fabric for re-doing a block. Two additional blocks can be cut from each 1/2 yard purchased. I purchased 15 yards for the king size, 20 block quilt that I am making. I realize that is more than I should need, but it enables me to exclude blocks or to re-make a block. None of the yardage given includes binding which I have assumed to be a contrasting fabric.

All yardage was figured using this layout. The diagram shows the fabric folded in half. The selvage edge is at the top and the fold is at the bottom. First I figured the long vertical borders. Both are cut at once as the fabric is folded. One length of fabric is needed for those. Next I figured the 2 short borders. These also need a length of fabric. Then blocks are cut. Each cut will produce 2 blocks. Cut as many as necessary for the size quilt you are making.

4-Block Wall Hanging

A 4-block wall hanging makes a great addition to your Christmas decorations. It doesn't have to be used on a wall. Throw it over the back of a sofa or use it as a table topper.

4-16" blocks surrounded by 10" borders will produce a wall hanging that is approximately 52" square. If you can find fabric that will give you a full 41" in width that you can use after you wash it and cut off the selvage, you can make this quilt with just 2 3/4 yards otherwise you will need at least 3 1/2 yards. Personally, I would purchase 4 yards.

12-Block Quilt

12 - 16" blocks with a 12" border will need at least 6 yards of fabric.

16-Block Quilt

Add a 14" border to 16 blocks to create a quilt approximately 92" square. 8 1/2 yards will get you started. 10 yards would be much safer.

20-Block Quilt

20 blocks - set 5 x 4 is ideal for a king size quilt. Add 16" borders and you are all set. You should be able to get the quilt out of 11 yards but please consider buying at least 1 extra yard - "just in case." This quilt will be approximately 112" x 92". Add pillow shams and you will be all set.

Yes, you can make a 5x5 quilt with a total of 25 blocks. It will finish at a generous 112" x 112". This will provide a nice pillow tuck. Better get about 15 yards for this whopper.
