Back Basting

As I give my trunk show I point out to my audience that I made 9** of the quilts they are seeing in just 3 years. They are always amazed at this and want to know my secret. It is a secret that I am happy to share. Back basting is a fast,, easy way to do needle turn applique. There are no templates, no freezer paper, no starch, no overlays. You will be amazed at how quickly you begin stitching.

** My Christmas Baltimore, Celestial Chorus, Christmas Memories, 4 blocks and borders of Iris on Parade, Flower Power My Way, Leola's Irises, Olive's Posies, Floral Delight, Be Mine in Applique, Buttons 'N' Blooms, Lora's Quilt, and BEEEZ

Paper Cuts

Many of my paper cuts were designed over a Thanksgiving holiday years ago. I loved those paper cuts but didn't know of a simple, easy way to stitch them. Then I discovered back basting. This class will cover most of the same material covered in my back basting class with the emphasis on techniques that apply to paper cuts.

Course Length: 3 hours
Pattern: Student will purchase any of my paper cuts.
Maximums students: 20
Course Outline:

  Hour 1

Prepare your paper cut.
Watch demo of back basting. (Includes important tips for success.)
Discuss how to clip and stitch a section of reverse applique.

If you are an accomplished appliquer, you will be free to baste at least a portion of your paper cut and to beginning stitching. If you are just beginning, I will show you how I stitch points, valleys, convex curves and concave curves.

  Hour 2
Discuss "shadowing" and see an example or two.
Learn to line a patch using the back basting method.
Study examples of lined paper cut blocks.
  Hour 3

During the third hour you may choose to stitch or to watch additional demos. These demos don't apply directly to paper cuts but may be of interest to some students.

Discuss a neat trick with bias stems.
Discuss applique on dark background fabrics.
Discuss Hawaiian quilting.

Applique on Dark Backgrounds

Working on dark fabrics is always a challenge. I once took a class from a teacher who recommended the use of chalk to mark the top of the quilt for needle turn applique. It sort of worked if you didn't mind getting chalk all over yourself and your project. Plus the problem of having to re-mark a large project because it was impossible to complete it before the chalk wore off. What a mess. No more. There is a very simple, clean way to stitch on dark fabrics. And yes, it is based on back basting and Glad Press 'N' Seal®. This class will cover much of the same material as my back basting class but with an emphasis on the use of dark materials.

Course Length: 3 hours
Pattern: Student will purchase any one of my "It's a Baltimore Christmas" or "Iris on Parade" pattern.
Maximums students: 20
Course Outline:

  Hour 1

Discuss appropriate fabrics for use with dark backgrounds
Prepare your background fabric.
Prepare your pattern using Glad Press 'N' Seal®. (Includes tips for handling Glad Press 'N' Seal®.)
Watch demo of back basting. (Includes important tips for success.)

If you are an accomplished appliquer, you will be free to baste at least a portion of your pattern and to beginning stitching.

Appliquer's Chatelaine

I can't imagine stitching without my chatelaine. It keeps me organized and at the same time keeps my work area organized. Everything I need is at my fingertips. In this class we will begin the process of making your chatelaine. Some will finish in just 3 hours. Others will only need a short time at home to finish their project.

Course Length: 3 hours
Pattern: Each student will purchase their own copy of "Appliquer's Chatelaine" .
Maximums students: 20
